Almost two years to the day after joining, I find it almost surreal to say that this is my final week as Marketing Manager of Biz Group.
In all honesty, when I first got the call to come and interview at Biz Group, I had to quickly Google the company mid conversation while the HR Manager was on the phone to me to see who it was. I had just moved to Dubai from Ireland a few days before this and I had probably applied for every job in the region that week.
Fishing with dynamite.
I can remember researching the company before going to the first interview and thinking that it probably wasn’t going to be the job for me, as I had no background in corporate training and teambuilding, and really didn’t know anything about the industry, in truth. When I saw that they had recently been awarded the #1 SME Great Place To Work in UAE award, however, I thought that there must have been some substance to it and it was surely worth checking out.
Whatever doubts I had about the role before meeting Charmaine, the then HR Manager who has recently retired, were quickly put to bed after that screening interview, and I knew that there was something special, if a little crazy, about the company. After a lengthy four part interview process, I became a member of the ‘Biz Family’ and have been treated like a family member ever since.
On 27 December 2015, we moved from our old office in Dubai Media City to a new space in IMPZ, one even more befitting of our Great Place To Work ranking. The new office has a slide from the mezzanine to the ground floor, one of those annoying hoverboards that kids have (that are actually awesome) to get around and a giant painting on one wall that we, as a team, actually painted together.
So why did I hand in my notice on 28 December 2015?
It was not a decision that was taken lightly, far from it. I am acutely aware that there are very few companies like Biz Group out there, and that I am extremely lucky to have worked in a company where I am genuinely great friends with all of my colleagues.
However, an opportunity has arisen for me with a very exciting tech startup from San Francisco called TINT, who recently set up a base in Dubai and are expanding their team here. It appears to be an awesome company who are doing things the right way, and as a result are growing rapidly and boast a spectacular client list.
There are a lot of similarities between TINT and Biz Group in terms of their culture and values, and it is these similarities that have drawn me to the new role. I love pretty much everything about Biz Group and go to work with a smile on my face every day, but unfortunately, training and teambuilding is not something that I share quite the same passion for as my colleagues. As a result, I think I can give more to TINT, as that industry is where my passion lies and is where I see my career developing.
I can’t say that there haven’t been moments over the past month where I haven’t had second thoughts, but then again, I wouldn’t be human if I didn’t, considering what I am giving up. Deep down, I know that I am making the right decision, albeit a difficult one to make, and I am incredibly excited to ride the startup wave. I know that I am in safe hands at TINT, as after experiencing what a great company culture is like over the past two years, I don’t intend to settle for any less for the rest of my career. Why would anyone?
